More
Than Just Grapes
Tantalize Your Taste Buds with Wines Made
from Other Fruits
When
making homemade wine, fruit wine is a natural choice. Almost any
fruit or berry can become wine. The only pre-requisite is the
need for a higher or high level of sugar. Grapes tend to have
the best balance for this however, wine can be made from many
fruits, including strawberries, plums, and elderberry. Merlot
wine could be thought of as the shy cousin of this type of wine
as it commonly has fruit undertones added to it.
Wines
can be produced from sweet foods containing the right amount of
natural sugar. They can also be sweetened with the addition of
honey or straight sugar. In addition, other fruits and plants
can be used for sweetness and typically this type of wine will
have herbs and other ingredients to enhance the flavor. Merlot,
although made from grapes utilizes the richness berries or currant
can add to the wine. Organic wines can be achieved this way as
well as the homemade vintner can pick and choose the fruits his
or herself. Your local market has an ever increasing selection
of organic
fruits and berries, often at a price very close to the non-organic.
Fruits
of the local climate are often the specialty of small wineries
or the home vintner. In Pennsylvania, a common fruit is the blueberry
or huckleberry as it traditionally called here. The
abundance of this fruit in nature has led this berry to be a favorite
for homemade wines. It can also be seen on the menu at the local
winery as either blueberry or huckleberry wine. However, no matter
where you go for your wine out, a trip on the local
wine trail will almost certainly yield a fruity wine tasting or
two. So take a Sunday drive, visit your local winery and get inspired!
